Results of 2024 North Street Book Prize! The results are in! Though Into the Known Universe: A Cosmic Love Story, Kinda sadly did not win the 2024 North Street Book Prize contest, it made it to the second round -- i.e., the top 21% of entries. So that's neat! Here's a snippet of what the judging panel had to say: "Into the Known Universe gave me much to enjoy. Along with the premise (Conradian here—It's always nice to see a fun variation on Heart of Darkness), one of my favorite aspects of the book was the unity of style and tone. (. . .) I was quickly drawn in by the detail, humor, and most of all, the consistently authentic feel of the writing. Great work. "The main reason this book did not advance was that it shared much in common with the subject matter, themes, and craft execution of other books I've read for North Street. (. . .) This is by no means a liability in the context of the general market. But due to the volume, the bar is high in the contest context. If the book had a narrower or less-common subject and a more specific angle, that could have helped to set it apart this year. "Although the book did not advance, making it to the top 21% of an entry pool of over 1,900 submissions is a significant feat. (. . .) I personally congratulate you on this addition to your body of work." So I didn't win, but hey, that's all right. Rest assured I'll be milking my finalist status for all its worth in my marketing efforts. |
